Queen of Tarts review

I received a text from a friend recently telling me that Queen of Tarts needed to be my next stop on my Breakfast Hunt as she had just had an amazing breakfast there. I’m not often around Observatory for breakfast but seeing as I was keen to check out the Obz Festival, I made plans to meet someone at Queen of Tarts for breakfast.

My expectations were high for two reasons, one was obviously my friend’s sms and the other was the prices. I had the full fry up (Two fried or scrambled eggs, pork sausage, crispy bacon and grilled tomato with wholewheat toast) and my partner had the omlette (With spring onion, cream cheese and rocket with wholewheat toast) and they were both R49, which might make it the most expensive breakfast I’ve had outside of Oasis at the Mount Nelson. Even Miss K’s superb offering is cheaper.

So perhaps it was inevitable that I would be disappointed. The omlette was not nice at all (which I was warned about in the aforementioned sms) and while my fry up included some nice crispy bacon, my fried eggs were massacred almost beyond recognition. There was no jam provided with the pre buttered (unusual?) toast (although I admit I didn’t ask) and breakfast did not include coffee. The cappucino cost an additional R15 and my partner’s homemade lemonade (which she enjoyed) was priced similarly.

While I didn’t particularly enjoy the breakfast and was quite unexcited about the price, I did like the place. It’s a very quaint little venue with very funky and cheerful decor. I walked through the kitchen to the al fresco courtyard out back and chose a table there. The service was fine and the place interesting enough for me to not regret going, but I doubt I will be back.

Some of you may know Queen of Tarts from the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill, they sell their tarts there and they are very popular. I would recommend that you stick to the tarts when you visit the restaurant.

I must say that in the Queen’s defense, from the minute I’ve set foot in the beautiful little gem of a place, I’ve been in love with it, and although it isn’t cheap, it’s worth it – I’ve only had great food, and GREAT coffee there 🙂
