On Broadway used to be situated on the corner of Somerset Road and Dixon St, Greenpoint. I went there several times, mainly to watch flamenco shows. I even ate there once (the food wasn’t great). But a few years ago, On Broadway moved to Shortmarket Street, into a bigger, better space. I went to the ‘new’ On Broadway last night for the first time (not sure why it took me so long).
It has certainly changed for the better, in a number of ways. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the chandeliers. There are several of them along the centre of the ceiling and they give the place a little glamour. Apart from the chandeliers, the decor is fairly plain with the ubiquitous show posters all over the walls. While the new venue is better, it is not perfect. It is elongated with the stage at one end, so if you want to be close to the action you need to book a table near the stage. The tables and chairs at the back are bar height so you can see the stage fine, but it is quite far away.
I didn’t eat there but the menu looks like it has improved, so I think I will try it out next time. The place was packed and about 70% of the people were eating so it can’t be bad. It is reasonably priced, with starters like fried calamari (R32) and soup of the day (R28). Some of the mains on offer were a burger (49), chicken curry (59) and roast lamb (R79), etc. Fairly basic foods which means not much should go wrong.
The show itself was pretty good. Nik Rabinowitz in uNik. I’m not the greatest fan of stand up comedy, but Nik is one of the few who can make me laugh (a little). Nik’s impersonations are really amazing, he caricatures the various types of people impeccably. I would always recommed Nik’s shows (good value at R85) but you must book in advance because it sells out weeks before. A lovely evening of entertainment. I believe that 3 Tons of Fun (which you might know from the Madame Zingara Tent of Dreams) are performing next and they are worth seeing too.

I saw the show last week, and it was great. I had the burger, and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.
