Breakfast really is still a big problem. I’d heard murmurings that Sundance Cafe on Buitengracht Street is the place to go for good coffee, so I decided to check it out on Saturday morning. I’m going to tell you all about it, partly because it’s good to know, but mainly because it’s good to talk about things that cause you anguish.
I ordered the breakfast special, which is eggs benedict and a coffee for R35. It looked pretty good on the promotion card. What arrived did not look anything like the picture and was totally cold. I know I can be quite particular about my eggs but I can’t believe anyone would enjoy a cold poached egg on ham on an english muffin. The coffee was gross. My friend ordered a mineral water. Besides the fact that the waitress had to use hand gestures to try and indicate the size of the different bottles (is it that hard to remember 250ml or 1L?), it didn’t arrive.
It reminded me about something another friend pointed out to me a while back: that if you order a glass of water, the waiter will very seldom remember it. He’s proved it to me a few times and I think I will start to use it as a test of the waiter. Finally talking about water, a pet hate of mine is when a restaurant won’t let you order tap water, they force you to drink mineral water (please email me if you have this experience). The tap water in Cape Town is very good by world standards. The only reason people are drinking bottled water here is because they are brainwashed by the propaganda of the companies that produce and market it (and maybe because of rat-tailed maggots, but that’s a recent development). I have found sundance to be a waste of time – almost R50 for a pre-wrapped take away sandwich?? When I complained to the manager that I could go sit down at one of the Carluccis and eat a great sandwich + cappuccino for less than the price of his sandwich he just shrugged. I don’t care if its owned by an Irish chef – I’m not paying more just because he’s on TV.
Agreed, at the end of the day it doesn’t make a difference who owns a place. It’s about value (the quality you get at the price you pay) and service.
