One of the things I like about Cape Town in the winter, is that there are plenty of restaurant specials and winter menus to take advantage of. It’s the perfect opportunity to eat at some of the restaurants that are normally out of your budget. I’ve listed those I am aware of here, feel free to add others as a comment. Bear in mind that the specials are often extended or the times change, so I would recommend calling ahead to check if the special is on when you are planning to visit (also, when I say everyday, I mean everyday that they are open).

  1. ah, the joys of winter! thanks for the comprehensive list, Dax 🙂

  2. bonbongift

I thought that Salushi’s half-price sushi was valid between 12 and 3pm every day of the week. Has this changed recently?

  3. I read somewhere that Salushi had extended the half price sushi from 3pm to 5pm but I haven’t called them to verify.

  4. Sally

This is fantastic……just one question. What about the ever popular Bayside Cafe in Camps Bay?

    1. I’m glad you asked about the bayside Cafe. After my experience there, I can’t in good conscience promote it.

You can read about my experience here:

    OOPS!
The contact number you have for Catharina’s on this page is wrong. The correct number is Tel: 021 713 2222 (as per your other page – http://relaxwithdax.com/?p=118)

  7. Thanks for pointing that out James, I’ve corrected the number.

I’ve also added the Wakame/Wafu specials.

  8. Added Buzz Cafe special.

  9. Well certainly live in a fantastic restaurant city! Thanks for this list, Dax.

  10. Dax dude, thanks for the list – very useful.

So useful in fact that it’s been emailed to me again several times without any reference to the site. It happens.

However, I’ve also seen it copied without credit in other blogs (including the very popular imod.co.za). These guys are making cash (they have advertising) off your content!

    http://imod.co.za/2009/05/28/winters-specials-for-cape-town-restaurants/

    http://www.thecru.co.za/2009/05/27/a-complete-list-of-winter-specials-at-cape-town-restaurants/

  11. Thanks for letting me know, Al. It looks like everyone in Cape Town has received an email with my list at least once. As you pointed out, none of them credit me, which is a bummer. I can only assume these other bloggers didn’t know the source.

I commented on their posts in case they are interested in crediting me.

  12. Hi Dax

Apologies for publishing the list without giving you credit – will amend that right away.

You are right – an email has been flying around and I received this list from friend (via email).

Had I known it was your list I would have given you the credit – I always do on The Cru.

While we are talking about the list – what are your picks from it?

    Brendon

  14. Hi Brendon, thanks for adding the credit.

What are my picks? Well, let’s see…

Last night I went to the Cape Colony at the Mount Nelson for their 4 course pairing. It’s unbelievably good and at that price you’d be making a mistake not to go. Seriously.

I love Caprice burgers, so I’m gonna hit that 2 for 1 special hard.

I’ve been wanting to try Terroir for a while now, so this seems like a good chance and same with La Colombe.

  15. Cleon

Hola Dax. A group of 6 of us had brunch at Bungalow in Camps Bay a couple of weeks ago, and we were pleasantly surprised when our bill arrived – the entire cost was halved ‘because it was raining’ – apparently it’s a winter special policy.

  16. Thanks for compiling this list Dax, super helpful.

  17. I’ve added the Roundhouse special and you can read my review on the Cape Colony Wine & Dinner series here:

    http://relaxwithdax.com/?p=1198

  18. Bazil

Both Constantia Uitsig & La Colombe do not offer the winter specials on a Sunday Lunch when the well heeled Contantia set shell out plenty dollars for fine fare.

  19. sarah

geishas special ended mothers day and andiamos is supposed to end at teh end of may. if it doesnt tho, it is seriously the best deal in cape town! do not miss!!!

  20. Johan

    Hi Dax
The Roundhouse restaurant is doing a lunch special 3 courses for a R150 wednesday to sunday.

  21. Graeme

    Hi Dax
Bhandaris in Westlake is offering Monday nights 10% discounts and R85 for all curries on a Tues.Come give us a try again (used to be Bihari)we have an amazing new chef that has done wonders for the food.

  22. Hi Dax

some friends of mine went to Beluga last night to take up their three course dinner special only to be told that they do not offer it.

I checked around online and found this:

    http://www.food24.com/Restaurant/Specials/Display/0,,624,00.html

it clearly shows that there is a three course dinner menu.

just wanted to know if indeed there is a special and how food24 could have got it wrong?

    thanks
    brendon

  23. Hildebrand Restaurant is offering a Winter Extravaganza Menu from this week till end of August, lunch or dinner. Set menu with a choice of 4 starters, 4 main courses and 4 desserts – R120 per person
    Tel 021 425 3385

  24. cape K

This is the most comprehensive list of winter specials I’ve found to date! Thanks Dax!

  25. I’m trying to keep the list comprehensive, so I’m updating it with specials as I hear about them. I’ve now added Hildebrand and Reubens [thanks JPR] and moved Beluga to continuous specials.

@Brendon, I got the Beluga special off their website, but I checked again and they have removed it, so it seems they are not offering it anymore. Sorry for any inconvenience.

As I mentioned in the preamble, it’s best to check the specials are still on before going as the restaurants will not notify me when they change or cancel any special offers.

  26. Wow, the specials are coming in thick and fast, I’ve added:

    Chenin (ex Nosebar)
    Fiesta
    Ginja
    Hussar Grill
    Jardine
    Wharfside Grill

  27. The special at Aubergine of ‘Two courses R185’, is about R185 to much. Very mediocre and poor value for money.
There are far better places on this list to enjoy good food.

  28. Many thanks for the list. May i publish it on my site, with credit of course. Also may I use some of your other articles?
    regards
    Warren

  29. Vanessa

Went to Geisha on Wednesday 3rd June. I was defintely NOT impressed with the service. The food was great but:

    1. The waiter did not even know about the specials when we first asked
    2. Then tells us it was no longer available
    3. There was no tuna fish so no tuna sushi
    4. The wine that we asked for was also out of stock (Beyerskloof pinotage)

Overall, not a very happy experience.

I also suggest updating the list with half price dim sum & tapas IN THE LOUNGE only

  30. Mate the most comprehensive winter specials guide for sure. I see that it’s doing the rounds good job Dax. Already tried out the Myoga specisl 🙂

    1. Thanks Benny, and what did you think of the Myoga Special?

@Vanessa, thanks for that feedback, I will note that the Geisha special is in the lounge only.

@Nols, I’m surprised to hear Aubergine was unimpressive, while I have never been, I’ve only heard good things. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to try it myself soon. Athough R185 for 2 courses doesn’t sound like a special price to me!

@Warren, thank you for your interest in my copy, I’ll email you.

  31. Rene Hurwitz

Hi – Who has been to the Myoga special and what was it like. Last time we went we found the portions small but i suppose with 6 courses you cant go too far wrong. How does it compare with 5 Flies. Which has better food. Thanks Rene

  32. Added Asara, Addis in Cape, Bertha’s and Gold African restaurant.

I heard Blues has a special on, but have not been able to verify it.

@Rene, I tried the Myoga special on Saturday night. I will post a review soon. The portions are small but that’s how it should be and I can’t compare it to 5 Flies because I haven’t eaten there in absolutely ages.

  33. Hi Dax – Apparantely Blues have 22% off their menu prices as a winter special adn Tuscany Beach has only certain items on the “2 for 1 ” special so its not all as clear cut as it seems.
How did you find the Myoga special – is it worthwhile or do you think a normal priced meal at say Millers Thumb is nicer?

    1. At R150 without wines or R225 with wines, I think Myoga is a good option. Stop trying to sneak my review out of me!

  34. o.k. but i believe its not great SO am going to try the early special tonight (in half an hour ) at the Kove in Camps Bay and will let you know what that is like – 50% off is ordered before 1845

  35. Let me know how it is and I am trying the special at the Hildebrand tonight, 3 courses for R120.

  36. Just come back from trying the specials at THE KOVE IN CAMPS BAY. They have 2 winter specials. A) 2 course plus a glass of wine for R100 or 3 course for R120 – choice of 4/5 different items. B)OR an early bird special – 1/2 price on ALL FOOD as long as your order is in before 1845. As I had already had half bottle of wine at home before eating we opted for the 50% off. I had calamri tubes grilled and served with a starch or veggies.- very nice and very large portion. 1/2 of R90 – hubby had the beef ribs which also came with starch or veg 1/2 of R100 – he said they were as good as those that Bayside serve although not as many but more than enough to eat. We ordered a side of onion rings and for dessert had “creme brulee” which had a ginger tasting caramel. – 1/2 of R40. Most desserts are in the R40-50 price category and then if youre wanting to go the whole hog you can have seafood. At half price its extremely good value. If youre in the mood for wine their R100/R120 works out about the same as the half price special – it just includes the wine and is available any time of night.

  37. Thanks for that comprehensive feedback, Rene. It sounds like a good deal. I don’t normally eat that early but R100 for 2 courses with wine sounds appealing.

I just tried out the Hildebrand special. 3 courses for R120. The food was not bad and the venue is also ok, just a bit old school. The thing is I don’t normally eat 3 courses as it’s too much food. It turns out the Hildebrand is quite reasonably priced anyway, you coould have 2 courses for R100 or even less from the menu.

If you want 3 courses, it’s good value, otherwise I’d try some of the other specials.

  38. I was raving about the pork prego at &Union recently

    http://relaxwithdax.com/?p=859#comment-37216

so thought I should let you know that at lunch time during the week you can get a prego, 500ml beer and coffee for R90. Which is about 20% off the normal price.

  39. Just had a good quality and good value lunch at Wasabi, they are running some good specials:

25% off sushi lunch times and Sunday, Monday, Tuesday evening.
    R110 for 26pc sushi platter
R120 for 30pc tempura/dim sum/sushi platter (this is what we had, enough for 2)

I also had the Tom Yum soup (R39) which was amazing.

  40. Had a few early dinners at Kove in Campsbay; all very good, portions generous, sunsets fabulous! Tried Tank for halfprice sushi last week (12- 6pm?) fantastic value, great service.

  41. Had the winter special at Andiamo but when the bill came they had charged for the “free” wine? It was pumping tho.. Lovely atmosphere.. and the other restaurants in the square were DEAD.. I’m loving winter specials!!!

  42. The Roundhouse has started an amazing new special, R180 for a 6 course dinner! I’ve added the details to the post along with a great Shoga special (5 tapas for R100) and I’ve updated the Addis special too.

  43. I tried out the burger special at Caprice last night. They are still among the best burgers in Cape Town and a steal at half price. The place was quite empty, so no need to worry if you think the crowd is too trendy for you.

You can also find my review on the Myoga special here:

  44. Jolene

Thank you for a wonderful website. Our dog, Dax, was bummed to hear he is not the only good looking Dax in Cape Town!

We have been to Kove in Camps Bay twice, enjoying the R100 special for two courses and a glass of wine and the food is truly EXCELLENT! You choose off a smaller menu but the selection is great (except no vegetarian meals on the main courses). Highly recommended though!

  45. Dax – have you or anyone else been to Addis – do you have to share tables or do you get your own table. What is the food like?

  46. Tried out the special at Addis in Cape Tonight. They recommend the set menu and on a sat. night its half price so its R75 p.p. All i can say is if youre under 40, have a cast iron stomach, can walk up 3 flights of stairs, then this is the place for you. Its certainly different! Not somewhere i will rush back to even though i love spicey food! Hubby prefers a “bord kos”

  47. Just to respond to Jolene’s Post
When we saw the special at the Kove 130 bucks for a three course including a glass of wine, we were a little wary as some of the specials are not always that special. Its on the Camps Bay strip which becomes pretty much vacant in Winter. The decor is great, and there is a specials menu which includes about 5 to 6 choices for each course. I ordered a Caesars salad which had a great anchovy dressing, I got on the side, my partner got the beef carpacio. Both were a high standard, and the salad portion was surprisingly ample, with well cooked bacon (not oily) and cos leaves. I got the Cabeljou and She got the Calamari. Both cooked perfectly. There were only 2 other value choices, otherwise burgers.
I paid a reasonable R10 extra to swap my rice for veg, which came perfectly cooked still firm. Recommended choice. Both meals were way above average with good attention to detail, the wine (red)was decent and at no point did we feel that we were eating a special, nor did it appear that there was any skimping at all. I must say that these guys have got the right idea, as I will now go back and try some of the other options off the special menu, which I have to say looked a little pricey, though not for the strip I guess. But food quality and detail will entice me back. It would be sweet if there were a few more classy (specials)mains to choose from. Service was friendly and upbeat, though the wait for the main was a little long for being quiet (10pm) but worth it.
For a glass of palatable wine, a fair size tasty Caesars salad and excellently prepared fish with salsa and generous aldente veg, for 110 bucks! Bill including one desert before tip- R240. A thoroughly enjoyable experience, which I highly recommend. I have tried many of the specials and I seriously don’t know where you could match this class of cuisine for the price.

  48. Concerning Geisha (aka liars, liars, pants on fires!)

Went there on Friday at 5pm for the “Half price sushi & dim sum before 7pm (in the lounge only) / 25% of noodle dishes
    Everyday”

Please note that the sushi, nor the dim sum, nor the noodle dishes are on special as advertised.
According to their manager it’s just their Tapas menu that’s on special. The Tapas available is in any case R60-R90 for 3 pieces, so NO SPECIAL here.

Maybe you should contact them Dax and ask them why they are such liars!

  49. Hi Anel, thanks for the feedback. I’m taking Geisha off the specials list.

Good news is I’m adding the Nova special which started today: 4 courses for R175.

I still advise everyone to call before taking advantage of a special as the restaurants can stop them or change them any time.

  50. Hi Dax

    Thanks for all these specials!
Just a note, I phoned Addis and they said the R90 special is not on at all, but R75 for 2 courses on a Saturday…

So instead of going to Addis on Friday, I went with a group of friends to Andiamo’s – and it was GREAT! The food was delicious, and the restaurant was full so there was a really nice atmosphere.
The deal at Andiamo is 2 pizzas and 2 glasses of wine for R99 or the listed pasta special.

  51. Thanks for the feedback, Kath. I have updated the specials list. It sounds like you’re going through it alphabetically…

Feedback is really appreciated because strangely the restaurants seldom update their website to reflect their specials and I don’t have the time to phone and verify each one.

  52. Kath – look at my write up on Addis – went there on sat. night

  53. Another one busted! A friend of mine went to The Kove last night for the half price on entire menu between 5pm & 6:45pm. So not true! When the bill came they had to pay full price. He also added that the steak 250g was more like a 180g and the dessert recommended by the waitress was yucky! As you said Dax, rather phone before going.

  54. That’s strange Anel, a few people have had the Kove half price special and raved about it. Maybe it started getting too popular and they stopped it?

  55. Could be that or maybe they thought my friends were foreign and assumed that they did not know of the special.

  56. Did they not say anything? That’s the other thing I do, when I arrive I state that I am there for the special or when I order I state that I am taking advantage of the special.

That way there is no confusion and they have an opportunity to tell me if I can’t have the special for some reason.

  57. You absoloutely HAVE TO ask for the special winter menu or if they have one as you say Dax. In fact i do it before i make the booking and reconfirm at the table otherwise you will not be offered it. The only place I think where they do always offer it is at Bayside and even if they dont mention it, its pasted in their regular menu. As far as I am aware Kove’s special is still on but at half price you need to place your order BEFORE 6.45 otherwise its not half price. Has anyone tried Bungalow’s special. Please report on it if anyone has – thanks!

  58. Boo Radley’s is running this specials until the 27th June:

Two course meal and a glass of Man Vintners wine for R120

    Starters
    French Onion Soup
    OR
    Chicken Liver Pate

    Mains
    Wild Mushroom and Truffle Risotto
    OR
    Beef Shin and Ale Pie

Served with a glass of white or red

    021 424 3040

  59. Anel – its not the foreign accent but the fact that the half price special at THE KOVE is no more. Just phoned them cause i saw other specials in the newspaper and that special (half price has ended) – they now still have the R100 for a 2 course with wine, so as Dax has said time and time again – ask first!

  60. Ate at Sinn’s on friday evening…thoroughly enjoyed their winter special… large party of 12, service was slick, efficient and friendly, started the evening off with an impromtu wine tasting at sinn’s delicatessan then enjoyed the special…two course meal with a glass of wine for R100… highly recommend it… otherwise ordered off the normal menue and food was excellent…

highly recommend the place… well worth visiting

  61. Greg – were the portion sizes decent at least because the last few times i ate ther the portions were TEEENY – (last year) and you needed at least 2/3 courses to fill you up – and i aint heavy!

  62. The Roundhouse has the best chocolate brownie in the world – FACT.
Seriously guys, you must try out their winter special. They’re doing 3 courses for R150 at the moment for lunch. And Rene… you can’t argue with The Roundhouse’s portions.

It’s the best thing to do on a lazy Sunday afternoon, i promise.
    Have you been yet Dax?

  63. @Greg & Jess, thanks for the feedback on those specials. I haven’t tried either of them yet but certainly hope to.

I’ve updated the list quite a bit. I’ve added:

    Den Anker
    Belthazar
    Blowfish
    River Cafe
    Chapman’s Peak Hotel
    Cassia
    Dolce Roma
    Barristers
    Opal Lounge

I didn’t include the Balducci’s special because I’m not convinced how special it is. They are offering flame grilled burgers from R55. Their lamb burger, which is the only burger better than the Caprice burgers, usually cost R75, but I don’t know if the special is the lamb burger or not.

I also didn’t include the Green Dolphin special of R200 for 3 courses with a glass of wine because I really didn’t enjoy the meals I’ve had there.

Also, I removed the Societi and Labia special because I had feedback that they are not giving their best so the pizza is barely worth eating. But I have added Societi’s lunch special.

    That should do for now!

  64. Hi Dax!
Thanks so much for compiling this list of specials, I always love winter in cape town for precisely this reason, but always miss some of the great ones!
On your list I’ve tried Sinn’s (great menu choices, change daily, very good value)
Aubergine (great food, would have been a value for money special if we hadn’t ordered wine (R265 for a simple shiraz, ridiculous! but we were celebrating)
Hussar Grill (simple, homestyle food, place was totally empty, though it was late afternoon)
and Fiesta (where we are regulars anyway, we are now vigorously tasting our way through the entire tapas menu).
Again, thanks so much, I use this as a reference every weekend!

  65. Rene – the portions were not small at all, and there was certainly was no need to hit Steers after having left Sinn’s as may be the case in some other winter specials…I left there very satisfied..

  66. Lauren

The Addis in Cape Special is only running for the month of June.

  67. Hi there Dax and all you other munchers-

Please help! My 40th is on Friday and I would like to go out with some friends for supper. About 12 of us. As a father of two, I think I’ve had about three restaurant meals in the last five years! Hopelessly out of touch.

Am looking for a special place with good atmosphere, not snobby or overpriced. I know its late and I may not get in – but would you recommend Bizerka or Sinns or another?

    Thanks for your list.

    Sean

  68. David Athens

Dax, I dont know if you have eaten at the Roundhouse recently but what an extraordinary experience. I have eaten four times before a while back but they have raised the bar unbelievably for Cape Town standards. We did not go for the birthday special but after reading the 6course menu we decided to give it a bash, even though I know what most specials entail and always set you up for failure. The meal was sublime, the flavours and textures were sensational and not a single ounce of compromise. Service as always was tops and atmosphere superb.
The real surprise was the bill, the best value I have yet to find anywhere I have eaten on and off the continent.

  69. @Sean for a group of 12, you probably need a wide menu. For vibey options, I would suggest you investigate the following:

    Rick’s Cafe
    Wakame
    Beluga

Hope you have a great dinner, let us know!

@David thanks for that feedback, I haven’t been lately but plan to try out the special next week. I’m looking forward to it.

  70. Jared Saunders

David I agree, also ate there recently and could not believe what a great time we had all round from food to service to their wine guy who opened a couple of bottles for us just to taste. I am fortunate that our company takes us out to all these fancy places and this by far was the best by a long way. I didnt see the bill until I took my girlfriend there, I was expecting to leave my car there as payment but the special saved my month.

  71. Thanks Dax for those recommendations. I am still toying with the Roundhouse or Sinns… Anyone been to both of them? Both seem to offer good value (I’m picking up the tab), although Sinns may be a little low on atmosphere…

Either way, will let you know.

    Thanks, Sean

    1. @Sean as you can see, Roundhouse is getting rave reviews and the special makes it good value (it’s normally prohibitively expensive). But the special menu is a selection of a few options, not the entire menu.

Sinns would be fine, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

  72. @Dax- Thanks again. Beluga etc. maybe too ‘mainstream’/model haunts… We are an eclectic bunch of cultural producers in many fields… Your post begs the question… 1st choice?

    1. @Sean Sinns will be good value seeing as you’re paying. Otherwise I still recommend Rick’s Cafe.

  73. Dax you are a true gentleman. Thanks for your advice. Am heading for Rick’s Cafe on Friday. Am sure it will not disappoint, tho’ it doesn’t really matter as I will be with good friends. Enjoy what remains of the week and I look forward to sharing my impressions with you… Hasta la Pasta!

  74. NOOOOOOOO! you are mad!!!!!! The Roundhouse is much better than Sinn’s. It’s not in a shopping centre for starters and you don’t overlook sweaty people coming out of Virgin Active. The Roudnhouse is set in the most beautiful place that overlooks the 12 apostles, the sea and camps bay and the food is to die for!!!
Sean – GO TO THE ROUNDHOUSE – YOU WON’T REGRET IT!!!!

  75. Michelle Ressel

    Hi Dax

Have you seen the Belthazar special? It includes a Rib eye steak, with sauce, side salad and as many fries as you want for R99.

They are also offering 100 Odd Bin wines from R49 – R79.

    Michelle

  76. Maria

I have had the Rib eye steak special at Belthazar- it was AMAZING! Will definitely go back there for a second round!

  77. Maria

    Hi Dax,

Bungalow is no longer having their half price cocktails & tapas between 5pm and 7pm Everyday special. They actually told me that they find it quite annoying that this special is still being circulated (NICE!!). So maybe to avoid disappointment it should be removed from the list.

  78. @Michelle, thanks, I did include the Belthazar special when I updated the list a few days ago.

@Maria, thanks for the feedback on the Bungalow special. I will remove it immediately.

  79. I’ve added the Blues special as well as the special at Saul’s Sushi @ Vegas.

  80. Michelle

A new special at Balducci’s till 31 July: All pizzas for R49 (includes all pizzas on the Balducci’s menu except the Flaming Prawns), Monday to Sunday, noon to 5.00pm.

  81. @Michelle, thanks I’ve added that Balducci special (which looks well worth a visit).

Also added the specials at Theo’s in Mouille Point and the new Bravado in Greenpoint. I removed Tobago’s which is not on offer any more.

  82. I went and tested out the Balducci pizza special today, read my thoughts here:

  83. Alison

I really don’t understand the hype around Rick’s cafe. Yes, their breakfasts are O.K.- but the rest of their menu really lacks interest. And dont even get me started on how dirty it is inside. Every time i have been there, there is a guy (assuming he is the owner or manager) shouting loudly at his employees- it makes it most unpleasant. I will not be going back there EVER!

  84. Rick’s Cafe: Went there with 12 mates for my 40th on Friday night as per Dax’s recommendation.

While my wife thought it was noisy at first, noise was exactly what I wanted… The evening was great – the food delivered what it promised, everyone was suitably impressed. Mezze good while steaks were top notch. The service was consistent, understated and solid. The vibe was the great differentiator tho – really humming.

I didn’t see any dirt ‘cos I wasn’t looking, and there was so much shouting that yes perhaps some if it somewhere was abusive… who knows! It was a wonderful evening. You can’t really go wrong here methinks.

    Thanks Dax.

  85. Thanks for the list – it’s awesome.

Our farm restaurant – Haute Cabriere – is also running a winter special at the moment. So I thought I’d add it to your already impressive list.

It’s a 2 course set lunch with a glass of Pierre Jourdan Brut for R100.00. It runs from now until 30 September.

  86. @Sean I’m so glad my recommendation worked for you and thanks for taking the time to give feedback.

When making recommendations people sometimes recommed their favourite places, without really taking into consideration what the person is looking for. I expected that Rick’s would be what you were looking for.

@Alison thanks for the comments. I haven’t experiences the shouting at staff thing (something which I do not like), but I haven’t been for a while so maybe it’s a new manager. As for the dirt, it hasn’t caught my eye but I’ll check it out next time I go.

  87. Candi

I just have to tell you how much I love Wakame/Wafu – i always have their Edemame beans with rock salt and their ginger/lime calamari – combine it with one of their cocktails and you are on the road to heaven 🙂 They also have a very cool vibe on Fridays for a drink after work on the roof (weather provided).

  88. Lindy

    The Barristers special is FANTASTIC!!!

  89. Sigrid

  93. Michael

Dax, Glad you have added La Boheme – great place. However, you now need to remove Nova.

  94. Jamie Who

Dax, something to add to your (now famous!) list. The Labia theatre is offering dinner at selected restaurants and a movie for 2 people for R70-R75.It is an awesome deal. I just wrote a post about it on http://www.jamiewhatshisname.blogspot.com

    Enjoy

  95. vyfster

Went to Five Flies bit more than a week ago for the 2 course special – terribly unimpressive. The lamb shank was dry and incredibly bland. As for the wine list – Most of what was on the list should be used for cooking only – might add some flavour to the food at least… Regarding the service, after anouncing in a loud obnoxious voice that we would be served by herself during the evening our waittress magically disappeared. We spent the rest of the evening begging for service, in fact the only people interested in our table were clearing away empty crockery. I found it quite interesting when our glasses disappeared(and pretty much everything which could be used for drinking out of) before the main course had even arrived…We ended up playing musical glasses. It was truly magical, especially the next day when two of our guests ended up with food poisoning…

  96. @Vyfster, that sounds like a horrible experience. I hope for their sake it’s a once off. Seems a little hard to believe that the majority of the wine last is only suitable to be used for cooking?

@Michael, thanks I have removed Nova. Wasn’t sure from exactly when they were closing.

I tested the Roundhouse special and it is magnificent, a treat. Read my full thoughts here

  97. Hayley

    Hi Dax,

Wow – your list seems to be all over Cape Town! I’ve tried out a few of your specials, and have loved all of them – thanks so much! I actually wanted to find out if you could please add our restaurant special to your list… We’ve just started it and it runs until the end of August (in the winelands). Please let me know (you can email me) and I’ll send you all the details. We’d really love to be on your comprehensive list!

    Thanks again for the blog!

    Hayley

  98. Michelle

    Hi Dax

Just to let you know that the Pizza Special at Balducci’s will continue until the end September: All Pizzas @ R49 (rxcept the Flaming Prawns) available everyday, from noon until 5.00pm.

    Thanks
    Michelle

  99. I’ve added the Backsberg restaurant special, as well as the early bird special at Brad’s Grill and the Blues wine pairing on Friday nights.

The Blues 22% off, applies to the bill, not just the menu so that’s quite good value.

The Balducci’s and Belthazar specials have been extended to the end of September.

  100. We were looking forward to a yummy meal at Five Flies but alas the winter special ended on 1 August 2009 🙁

  101. The winter specials have peaked and will slowly dissipate as summer arrives.

I’ve removed the Five Flies special as well as the Buzz Cafe special.

Please let me know of any others which are no longer valid.

  102. If you are like my family and enjoy good fresh fish & chips. Neptunes (Fish)(ex Jack Sprat on Rosmead Ave, Claremont) has R10 off all main Sunday lunches 12-2pm only. They have a special sunday lunch menu.
    Big portions & are halaal.
    Tel: 021 671 1943

  103. Gooze Gordon

Folks- – I dont know how EASTERN FOOD BAZAAR in THE WELLINGTON in Longmarket Street( through to Darling st) can serve an Authentic North Indian Vegetarian curry, with a side of Basmati rice and dhaal and salads and all the sauces you can muster, as well as free lemon water in a jug for a grand total of R15 – yes that is FIFTEEN SOUTH AFRICAN RONT!!!

Now you can updrade to a chicken curry for R20 or Lamb for R30

Naan bread baked as you watch for R6

    Its crazy folks.
    Now thats credit crunch friendly.

    1. Hi, yes I’ve heard about this place from someone else as well. I’m dead keen to try it out. But I think I’ll try the bunny chow which is apparently quite good.

  104. Jamie Who

Hey Dax, I’ve also been trying my best to find time to get there. This one is getting a lot of air time! Here’s a “preview” I did…

    http://jamiewhatshisname.blogspot.com/2009/06/curry-in-hurry.html

  105. Hi All

I’m looking for the name of a new restaurant in Cape Town CBD. Apparently it’s in the same building as madame zingara once was (before it went down in flames).

    Please help!

    1. I don’t think the old MZ building is being used. But I know the MZ owners have opened a new restaurant called Bombay Bicycle Club, at the top of Kloof St, oppposite Baccinis.

  106. A new website has been launched which lists all specials in Cape Town. Unlike my list you can search it and sort it. Very useful!

    http://www.dailyspecials.co.za

  107. Rebecca

I now wish I hadn’t posted the Brad’s Grill special – My sister and I decided to go for an early dinner there at 6pm. It was a weeknight and since it was so early we thought we’d take a chance, not having reserved a table. We walked into Brad’s Grill restaurant, and stood in the doorway for at least a minute while the waiting staff ignored us. Annoyed at not being seated straight away, we decided to seat ourselves at an empty table nearby, as it had no reserved sign on it. We had barely sat down when a large man whom we assumed to be the manager confronted us and asked us in a rude, accusatory tone who had told us we could sit there, and if we had made a reservation. We said that no one had paid any attention to us when we were waiting to be seated, so we sat down at this table because it did not appear to be booked. ‘No, we’re fully booked! Fully booked!’ was the response from the manager, and as he walked away he said over his shoulder, ‘You should have phoned and booked’.
This man was so unnecessarily rude. The restaurant was not that busy, and for all they knew we might not even have known about the special. The least someone might have done would be to apologise for not being able to cater for us, and suggest nicely that we book in advance next time. I hope everyone will think twice before giving their patronage to this odious man’s establishment.

  108. Diva’s in Buitenkant Street makes the best pizzas – service can be a bit tardy, but friendly.

  109. GOLD Restaurant based at 96 Strand Street in Cape Town has extended its winter special till the end of the September 2009. For R180pp-this includes a half hour session of interactive drumming followed by a 14-course set menu and live entertainment. The live entertainment is our life size Mali puppets with African singers and performers. The final performance is by the staff drumming, singing and dancing. An evening to be experienced amongst our cosy leafy courtyards.

  110. I tried out the Wharfside Grill special tonight, read my review here:

    http://relaxwithdax.com/?p=252&cpage=1#comment-41736

  111. Hi Dax

I just wantt o report back on my experience at Five Flies. They do still have a special there but the way that they go about it seems quite underhand and left a bad taste in my mouth 🙂 (pardon the pun)
I arrive with my partner for their ‘happy hour’ where South African drinks are half price, it was very difficult to ascertain which drinks those were, but we opted for conservative options and checked at each stage with the waitor. My family arrived to join us and we ordered some glasses of wine and a couple of Hunters (we neglected to check these as it seems a reasonable assumption that they would be half price). When my partner went to settle the bill only the savignon blanc was half price but not the chardonney, nor were the Hunters. Paying full price is not necessarily an issue, but when the special says happy hour and none of the waiters are able to clarify to which drinks the special actually applies to – well that’s just poor form.

Before going to Five Flies we phoned to confirm that their special was on – the special is 25% to 50% off meals Mon/Wed/Fri depending on a roll of a dice. So with this expectation we went downstairs to enjoy our meal – which was delicious, if very pricey. When the bill came, it was for the full amount. My partner didn’t want to say anything, having already challenged the waiter over the drinks bill. But when I went to the waiter to check he suddenly said ‘oh yes – we’re coming to do that now’.

I am not a cheapskate, but things like this are really upsetting – when you have planned for a special night out and you are made to feel like you are the one being difficult when you want what they have offered.

I will not be going there in a hurry despite the delicious food and nice atmosphere.

    Sorry for the long story!

  112. Hi Dax

The Addis in Cape special is no longer running – currently they are running a Dinner Set Menu at R135 with starter, main course 8 varieties, dessert and Ethiopian Coffee.

They are well worth a visit.

  113. Thanks Lauren, I’ve updated the list.

A note for everyone, please be aware that the specials are coming to an end. Some of them are finished, others end at the end of September so please check before going there or ordering.

  114. Sea Point Lunch Specials UNDER R25

    I found two :

    ______________________________

Also down the main road at Off the Hook fish take away (outside Adelphi)
    A Med pizza-box-full of Calamari / fish n chips R20

    Im off for Chinese…

    1. Wow, those are some cheap lunch options. Let us know how they are…

  115. Here are the current Sinn’s specials…

Lunch (served between 11am and 4pm)
    Gourmet sandwich R35
    Daily lunch special main R45

    Dinner (served from 6pm)
Choice of meat or fish main course paired with a glass of wine R85

  116. Hi Dax

Subarshi in the Foreshore next to Cal’caccio’s has 1/2 price sushi on Tuesday nights. Thanks!

  117. can you tell me where cafe sofia is in sea point and has anyone been there for their breakfast special. It cost more or less what i pay for a “flat white”.

    1. Hi Rene, the Cafe Sofia in Camps Bay is above the Pick ‘n Pay. I haven’t eaten at that one but have had the breakfast special at a few of the others and it’s really a great deal. The service and quality varies between them. I’ve found Greenpoint to be good, but as I say, haven’t tried Camps Bay yet.

      See my review here http://relaxwithdax.com/?p=477

  118. Thanks Dax – its actually the Sea Point/and or Green Point ones that i am more interested in trying en route to work in the mornings. Believe the Sea Point one Michael told me is near Adelphi centre. Where is the Green Point one.
I tried the Eastern Food Bazaar for lunch today – just felt i needed to go there so parked nearby – dont forget its R8.40 an hour to park. The food was excellent. No more R15 vegetarian dishes though – theyre R20.00 and most of the chicken dishes are R25/30. I tried the Chicken Tikka marsala and it was great. A huge portion – half a plate of rice which i ate – dont normally and then a small bowl with about 4 nice big chunks of chicken and 2 potatoes and then a small of lentils and some cucumber and tomatoe on the side. Naan bread R6 or the garlic one was i think R9. Excellent i must say i was quite surprised and its also very clean inside too. Would definitely recommend it if youre around town at lunchtime. I forgot to ask what time theyre open till in the evenings – anyone know?

    1. I’d definitely go for the Greenpoint one over the Seapoint one.

  119. Rene – its beside the Victoria Junction Hotel.

  120. Michael – i hope i will not be having more sm – you told me that too – well will try that one morning – maybe you want to as well!

  121. We went to Sinns 2 october 09 (wembley square) for dinner and it was a shocking experience.

1: The waiter forgot one starter
2: He forgot one main and everyone’s food was cold by the time we finally got to eat (to which he promptly responded ‘i forgot, sorry.’
3: On two different occasions he forgot to bring cold milk with our coffee when we ordered it specifically
4: I had had enough when I found a granadilla seed in my water glass (which i had had a sip of)
5: The prawn spring rolls had a sort of mushed crab meat in them which was extremely salty and odd tasting.
6:On numerous occasions forgot our drinks orders
7: not once did he come check up on us when we received our food and we had to hunt him down and shout to get some attention (on I might add not a busy night at all)
8: when asked what was in the food we were eating he was clueless and went to find out.
8: The vegetarian selection is poor and I would not recommend it us veggies!
9: the tables are far too high and I felt like a prisoner.
    10. The restaurant was mostly empty but we got seated at the kitchen entrance which was quite unsatisfactory.

On a good note the I did have the Mushroom Ravioli which was decent and my partner had the Lamb curry which too was very satisfying.
the decor is mostly good, intimate and ambient.
MAYBE WE JUST HAD A BAD WAITER ON A BAD DAY?

  122. five flies
I have been to five flies recently and for a vegetarian who doesnt eat fish (if i can help it) they have the most awesome pasta I have ever had! The service was great but our seating again was right next to the kitchen entrance which did not make for a quite meal.

I AM FUSSY and VEGETARIAN! So i find it hard to reccomend places but Cafe Royale on long street does the most amazing Veggie burger. GOOGLYMOOLEY! gota try it.

  123. Hi Dax,

I think you should create a restaurant specials page that doesn’t just apply to winter, there are loads of restaurants that do year round specials. Like the Tank restaurant in Green Point: 1/2 Price Sushi & Cocktails everyday from 12pm to 6pm & they’re giving away Tank Dollars too now (spend R250 plus at Tank & get a Tank $50 (R50) back to spend the next time you visit Tank)…

  126. re…http://www.dailyspecials.co.za WHAT SPECIALS?

Clicked on the up to date site!?
    ie(DAILY…specials)not Yearly specials…

I noted 2 specials in C. Bay,took my friend to Camps Bay last Friday.

Asked Caprice re their 3 course + beer as per website.

They looked at me blankly (the manager and waiter)

So went to Tuscany for their advertised specials- and got the same blank look.

I cant stand useless websites .

Or were the specials put there to lure customers?

Are there any up to date blogs / sites on SPECIALS

    help in these trying times…

    1. I’m not sure what’s happening with dailyspecials.co.za as I’m not involved with that site. It sounds like, from what you say, it is not being updated. I do say in bold at the top of my post that it is advisable to phone and confirm before as most of these specials are no longer valid.

I know they were running a special at 1800 at the Cape Royale, maybe check that out.

I will do another list in winter but I think with the World Cup, restaurants might hold back until August with their specials.

  127. Nichole Vaughan

Hi, just to let you know that the Wharfside Grill at Mariners Wharf is still having there winter special.

    Many thanks

    Nichole

  128. Michelle

    Hi Dax

    thanks

  129. candice

Hi Dax, Any chance of an accomodation winter specials list if you know of one?

    1. Hmm, nice idea. It would take a lot of research, which I don’t have time for right now. But I might do something like that in the future.

  130. Hi Dax – Andiamo no longer have their winter special although I imagine that after the WC it will come back on !

  131. Dear Dax
The winter special rate of R180 at GOLD Restaurant is no longer valid. Although for guests staying at guest houses/hotels in the Cape Town city bowl or Camps Bay we offer a shuttle service . For 250pp – you are picked up and dropped off again at the guest house/hotel, free entry to the Gold of Africa Museum, cocktail on arrival, 15-course set dinner menu with live entertainment. For 300pp, all of the above including an interactive drumming session. for more details please contact the Restaurant on 021 421 4653 and ask for the shuttle package.

  132. Complaint about Brad’s Grill.

I took a client for drink at Brad’s Grill last night.

We arrived at 6pm and left just after 7pm. It was a Wednesday. During this time we each consumed two glasses of wine. The place filled up, but there was always a table or two free. We sat at a 2-seater in a corner. The waitress was very friendly.

At approx. 6.45pm, a big man who I assumed was Brad arrived at our table. He then proceeded to give us a 2 minute lecture about how we were using up valuable table space, and making his restaurant lose money. He claimed that he had turned lots of people away because of us. He did a fair bit of swearing.

I’d heard stories from a couple waitresses about how he is a bastard to work for, but I try not to believe hearsay.

We found the experiencing fairly amusing and an example of customer disservice, but we swore never to go there again. I’m sure he has ‘the customer is king’ written somewhere on a wall. It amazes me how a person who behaves like this can run a well-known restaurant.

  133. Marcus – no disrespect and I dont go to Brad’s grill but its not a place for drinks – it is a restaurant. There are surely lots of “drinks” places in the area as opposed to a restaurant like Brad’s grill.

  134. Please could you add this to the speacials

Chenin Restaurant is having a New Year’s Eve special at the Old cape Quarter Piazza: Dinner and Dancing

    3 course meal
    Complimentary glass of bubbly
    DJ Mood providing the tunes

    R500pp, booking essential 021 425 2200
