On Broadway theatre has moved into what was the New Space theatre in Long Street and On Broadway restaurant has taken over the space that was Time Out Cafe. We ate at the restaurant before watching a show upstairs. The restaurant is not reserved for patrons of the theatre, it’s available to anyone looking for a dinner option (in fact it is open all day).
Having said that, I does get really busy just before the show with people trying to get a drink at the bar (you’re allowed to take your drink into the theatre). It looks like all the furniture (white tables and chairs) from Time Out Cafe has remained. The place has a buzz, in fact, when it’s busy you can barely hear what anyone is saying at your table. Although there was a particularly rowdy table next to us so maybe it’s not always that bad.
The thing about On Broadway restaurant is that it’s really good value. For starters we had fried calamari (R32) and crumbed mushrooms (R19), the mushrooms were ok (generous portion at that price) but the calamari was quite nice. For mains we selected from their burger promotion and both had chicken burgers with peri peri mayo (R59). The burgers come with fries but we ordered a greek salad (R39) to add a healthy element and the salad was actually really good, fresh with nice olives and feta etc. The burgers were good too.
A bottle of Mountain Ridge wine (not great) set us back R120. The wine list is not extensive, but nor is it expensive. The waiter did a pretty good job considering how busy the restaurant was and we had an enjoyable experience at reasonable prices. I’d recommend it as a casual option.
