Do you enjoy watching the food channel? If you are reading this blog, then there is a good chance that you do. I know I do. Watching chefs create masterpieces is fascinating. They make it looks so easy, it’s quite inspiring.
Experiencing it in real life is even better because you can interact with the chef, ask questions and watch how they handle things when they go wrong. This is what I experienced when I was invited to watch Franck Dangereux give a food demo at The Foodbarn in Noordhoek.
The Foodbarn has launched its new Winter menu special and it’s an upgrade on last year’s offering. Three courses for R165, four for R185 or five courses for R215. All courses come with a small portion of Steenberg wines, except for dessert. Anyone who knows Steenberg wines will know this is a treat and anyone who knows food will know this is amazing value. In fact I had a quick look at my review of the Foodbarn from 2009 and the special was R200 for 3 courses, so 2 years later it’s cheaper and you get some wine! Crazy!
The cooking demonstration only happens on Wednesdays from 6pm to 7pm and is free to those who have booked for dinner on the night. I can tell you it’s a very effective way to work up an appetite. By the time I had watched Franck put together the two dishes I was starving!
After the demo we moved to our tables and began our four course flavour extravaganza. We had a starter, fish course, meat course and then dessert. The menu changes every couple of weeks so there’s no point telling you the details of what I had, but I can tell you for free that everything was incredibly delicious. Especially the dessert, wow, and it was so pretty, look at the pic below.
This is really a great Winter special and the food demonstration is a lovely treat. I urge you to go and try it out for yourself.
