Best Breakfasts In Sea Point

I’ve been living in Sea Point for nearly 15 years and I’ve really enjoyed it. But apart from a few trusted favourites like La Boheme and La Mouette, I’ve generally dined outside of Sea Point. That is until about a year ago.

Suddenly a million new restaurants have popped up in Sea Point, mostly on Main Road and Regent Road. Now there are all sorts of exciting dining options in Sea Point and I can walk to all of them from my place. I must say I miss the original New York Bagels, that was a breakfast experience of note. It would definitely make it onto this list if it was still around.

I thought I would do a post on my favourite breakfast spots in Sea Point. People know what the good restaurants are for dinner in Sea Point but breakfast is a bit more difficult. So here you go, from a Sea Point local, the best places for breakfast in Sea Point:

Mushrooms on sourdough at Baked Bistro

This is my favourite breakfast at the moment. I love mushrooms and I love poached eggs (especially when they are perfectly poached), so this breakfast really does it for me.

Baked Facebook page

I’m a huge fan of poached eggs, especially when they are perfectly poached like these. Put them on top of creamy mushrooms, on sourdough toast, and you have one of my favourite breakfasts. Find this at Baked Bistro in Sea Point.

Cheapest breakfast in Sea Point

Unreal Breakfast at Spur

2 fried eggs, 2 rashers of bacon, fried tomato, chips and 2 slices of toast, all for R29,90. That’s a good deal. I’m not ashamed to say that I have this breakfast quite often.

When you forgo the toast, you want to know that you will still feel full and this breakfast is perfect for that.

Juice at Nu

We all know how healthy fresh veg & fruit juices are. All those nutrients in a few sips. My favourite is the Rainforest.

Best coffee (and best bagel) in Sea Point

Kleinsky’s

I know that the majority of the comments on this article will be to tell me that this and that place has the best coffee. I’ve had coffee at all the coffee shops in Sea Point and my favourite is Kleinsky’s, and that’s that.

Also, bagel lovers will just platz when they sink their teeth into the breakfast bagel which has lamb bacon, fried egg, cheddar and tomato.

Most vibey breakfast spot in Sea Point (and most interesting menu)

Jarryds

Bootlegger was also a contender for this category but I’ve got them in another category. Jarryds is actually the busiest breakfast spot in Sea Point, without a doubt. But they also have the most interesting breakfast menu with a ton of options. Fancy something different for breakfast? How about huevos rancheros? Or maybe sweetcorn fritters or house baked granola? Jarryds has a huge menu of unusual breakfast options.

Best breakfast in a rush

Vida e Caffe

I’m not the biggest Vida fan but the reality is when you’re in a rush you know you’ll get served quickly there. You can select one of the pre-prepared sandwiches/croissants to go with your coffee and you’ll be on your way in no time.

Best breakfast with a view in Sea Point

Rockpool

It’s weird that there are so few restaurants on Beach Road in Sea Point. So there isn’t really much competition in this category. Rockpool is definitely the best breakfast spot with a view. I haven’t actually eaten breakfast there yet, but I had a look at the menu and there are some nice options, including a very appealing looking chai berry smoothie bowl.

Best vegan breakfast in Sea Point

Scheckter’s

That chai berry smoothie bowl at Rockpool is vegan friendly but apart from that the options for a vegan breakfast in Sea Point are very limited. Basically, Scheckter’s is it. I haven’t eaten breakfast at Scheckter’s but if I did, I think I would order the pumpkin pie flapjacks! One of the menu items is vegan scrambled eggs, which obviously has no egg in it. Sounds very strange to me.

Best for working breakfast in Sea Point

Bootlegger

Got the laptop with you? Then Bootlegger is your place. You’ll fit right in with the other 50 people working on their laptops and taking advantage of the free WiFi. Just remember the etiquette of working in coffee shops, order a minimum of a coffee for each hour you are there.

Best for a breakfast date

Bistro at Cascades On The Promenade

Planning some special time with your partner? Then Bistro at Cascades hotel is your best bet. The hotel is called Cascades on the Promenade but it’s not actually on the promenade, it’s on Arthur’s Road, opposite the Spur. You’ll want a table on the large patio and if you suspend belief for just a minute, you’ll think you’re having breakfast in a European city. I really enjoyed my omelette too.

Best dog friendly breakfast spot in Sea Point

Flatteur

To be honest, I’ve always just walked past this place because it really doesn’t look very inviting from the outside. But then someone told me that they go there because it is dog friendly and there are not many dog friendly options in Sea Point. So I popped in to confirm that it is dog friendly, and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s actually very nice inside, I could definitely have breakfast there. In fact, I intend doing that very soon. The menu has some appealing options including Croque Madame and Croque Monsieur which I seldom see on a menu.

Just for the record, it’s not like it’s teeming with dogs. There were in fact zero dogs when I was there.

Best pastries in Sea Point

Nowhere

I’m afraid to say that when it comes to good pastries, Sea Point just doesn’t have a decent option. If you’re desperate you might find something semi-decent at Knead or Baked, but when I need great pastries I head into town.

There you have it, my top breakfast spots in Sea Point. Do you have a favourite that’s not on the list? Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to try it out.

Thanks for all that Dax. I know you said everyone will have their opinions on coffee. I am a coffee addict and connoisseur and for me THE BEST BEST coffee is at Mischu. I have been going there daily since the day they opened. Kleinskys I would rate as 2nd. I am just comparing coffee as Mischu does not have food except for croissants. You have also left out the best cheesecake and that is without a doubt at BONJOUR also divine pastries there. Perhaps you havent tried it. If not try it for breakfast, lunch or cake and coffee. It is at the TOTAL garage Main Road, cnr ALbany Rd. Hmm think it calls for a piece of cheese cake today.

  2. Thanks for the tip, I will definitely be visiting Bonjour soon! As for the coffee, we’ll have to agree to disagree. I’ve tried Mischu a few times and still much prefer Kleinsky’s. Perhaps it depends on the type of coffee one has? I normally am comparing flat whites…

Bonjour at the Total garage for pastries is great! Fabulous almond croissants, better bagels than Kleinsky’s and Chiffon cake to die for …. Also great Cheesecake. The bakery staffare the ex-New York Bagels staff.

    1. Thanks for the tip. I’m getting a lot of people saying the Total is everything, so will definitely make a point of going there.

  4. Hi Dax I often have an argument with my walking partners. Where can one find the best Boiled Bagels in town?

    1. Hi Eban, I’m told the bakery at the Total garage in Sea Point (yes, I know, but apparently they have cred), New York Bagels on Harrington Street and possibly Max Bagels. Maybe Kleinsky’s too?

  5. I went to Baked Bistro to have my favourite breakfast earlier this week and Baked is no longer there. The whole place has been stripped. No sign to say what has happened. All very strange and I’ll miss that breakfast!
