Piccolo Mondo review

Whilst I may be hard to impress (we’re not called ‘critics’ for nothing), I am quite easily pleased. It’s seldom that I go out to eat and find the experience completely disappointing. Each experience will have some aspects that detract from it, but there are normally some redeeming aspects too.

Dinner at Piccolo Mondo in Seapoint Main Road was a waste of my time and money. I’ve seen the place when driving along and always wondered what it was like. It doesn’t look that great, but sometimes you can find a homely, inexpensive place that provides a good meal and a friendly environment. Anyway, a friend and I were looking for place to have some dinner the other night and our first choice, Posticino, was full. There is a good reason for that, it’s a great restaurant.

So we walked a bit further and decided to give Piccolo Mondo a try. The place doesn’t have much character, but it seems clean so that’s fine. The service was ok, we did have to wait unnecesarily a few times but nothing too hectic.

The wine list is inexpensive, but it is also short and the wines are horrible. I hardly recognised any of the wines and those I did recognise were ones I knew to avoid. We chose something, it turned out to be horrible, we didn’t even finish it. I’d rather pay a bit more and have some decent wine. At this point I’d just like to say that my favourite wine list is at Col’caccio. They have a decent selection of great wines at very reasonable prices.

The food was

terrible. We only had mains, which I was gratful for. I had the Puttanesca and my companion had the Carbonara, both around R55 I think. They were both horrible. They told us the Bolognaise was amazing, so I asked for a spoonful to try (they get a point for facillitating my request). It was even worse than what we ordered, thank goodness I didn’t go for that.

I will definitely not go back to Piccolo Mondo and I’m not even going to put their contact details below because you won’t be needing them.
