Eat Out Magazine has released their list of top ten restaurants in South Africa for 2008. Last year, 7 of them were in the Western Cape and this year again, 7 of them are in the Western Cape. Check out my post on last year’s awards and visit the Eat Out top ten webpage here.
Ginja, The Showroom, Jardine and Bread & Wine are there again. I have eaten at all 4 of those except Jardine. Looks like I’ll have to make a plan to get there soon, from what I hear, that might involve a call to my bank manager.
I would say that Bread & Wine was the most enjoyable for me. The food was really good but not all fancy schmancy and sitting in the lovely al fresco dining area is quite therapeutic. The Showroom would probably be my choice for dinner. The food was excellent and interesting and it’s less pricey than some of the other options (especially the set menu places like Jardine, Ginja and The Tasting Room).
So here is the list (in no particular order):
The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Francais, Franschoek.
Jardine, Cape Town
Aubergine, Cape Town
Bread & Wine, Franschoek
Grande Provence, Franschoek
Ginja, Cape Town
Roots, Johannesburg
The Showroom, Cape Town
Linger Longer, Johannesburg
9th Avenue Bistro, Durban
Chef of the year is George Jardine of Jardine and Restaurant of the year is The Tasting Room.
