Coda, Freshlyground & Goldfish concerts review

This past week was the most musical week I think I’ve ever had. Wednesday night I went to the launch of Coda’s album at Planet Bar. Then on Thursday night I went to hear Freshlyground play at Cafe Miam and Sunday night was Goldfish at Kirstenbosch.

The Coda Album (Believe) launch was awesome. It was so well supported, I’ve never seen that many people at Planet Bar. The weather was perfect so they were able to set up a stage in the garden. Standing at the stage and looking back was a sight to behold. The grass was packed and the terrace was packed from the left to the right. It was a huge crowd and they were loving the performance. And for good reason, Coda were at their usual breathtaking, gooseflesh-making best. If you weren’t there, you missed out. But, get hold of the album and experience a little of what you missed. Next up, Freshlyground. I did not know that Cafe Miam has another whole section with a large bar and plenty of floor area. The actual concert took place in this new area, which was great. They had a raised stage and 300 people stood and watched the show. With the big bar right in the middle, we could easily top up our drinks. I was treated to the VIP version of the function which involved a 4 course dinner before the concert and then ‘golden circle’ access for the performance. The dinner (prepared by the resident ex-Mount Nelson chef) and was very tasty. The portions were small (it’s all about the flavours and presentation, man!), but I wasn’t hungry at the end of it and appreciated the concert more not having that stuffed feeling. The band was great, I’ve never seen them live before, I’m embarrassed to say. They played the songs we all know from the radio and the others I didn’t know were just as enjoyable. In fact, I have ordered their CD from Kalahari.net!

And last, but not least, Goldfish. Just look at the pic below, I think it says a lot. It was a perfect day for the first Kirstenbosch concert of the season and Goldfish invited the people that collaborated with them on their album to play with them. So there were an extra 3 or 4 people which added to the already great performance. As you can see from the pic, the crowd loved it. I loved it. Everybody loved it. Go and check out the website www.goldfishlive.com and see how you can vote for another one of their tracks to be on the 5FM, ‘Hi 5 at 5’ (their last one hit number 1).
