Blu Bar review

Blu Bar (ex Sobar) in Newlands recently reopened after undergoing a refurbishment. I went there last Thursday evening to check out the place, try their food and listen to the live band.

The place looks much more sophisticated now. The decor is modern and has obviously had some skilled input. Whilst they are catering for sport watchers by showing any notable sporting event on their big screen as well as several TV’s dotted around, they seem to be trying to attract an older, more sophisticated crowd. The lounge area where the big screen is located has comfortable and stylish couches and chairs arranged around several tables. The thing I really like about this area is that it is removed from the loud music in the bar area, so if you want to have a conversation where every sentence doesn’t have to be repeated 3 times, you can.

But on the other hand, if you feel like dancing, the bar section has an area designated as a dance floor. The bar is really long, so it’s easy to get a drink or at least to get to the front of the bar and try and get a drink. The bar area also has a section of tables and chairs for those wanting to enjoy a meal. There were quite a lot of us so we tried quite a few things on the menu. I had the Sweet Chicken pizza (49) which was great. A few of the other pizzas received positive comments. One person had the Cholesterol pizza (R55) which wasn’t great, just too much meat.

A couple of people had burgers and raved about them. The person who ordered the Bluuuu Burger (R42) reckoned it could be the best burger he has ever had. They make their own patties and that always makes a difference. There are also salads and bar snacks available (I tried one of the ribs, very nice).

We drank beer mainly so I don’t remember much about the wine list. I do know that the owner went to some trouble to ensure he obtained a selection of quality wines, in keeping with the style of the place. Service was fine, under difficult circumstances.

When we were there, Plush was playing an unplugged session. They are very talented and the intimate atmosphere made it a very nice experience. Blu Bar is offering live bands on Thursday evenings and numerous specials and promotions throughout the week. Check out their website for details. The prices are reasonable, the food is good and the vibe is good so it’s definitely on my list of options for when I’m in the Southern Suburbs.
