The S.Pellegrino list of top 100 restaurants in the world has been released. Last year, South Africa had one restaurant in the top 50 (Le Quartier Francais at position 50) and another in the top 100 (Jardin at position 93). This year we have fared much better with two in the top 50 and another three in the top 100.
In the 2009 list, Le Quartier Francais finds itself at position 37 (taking the title of best restaurant in the Middle East & Africa), followed closely by La Colombe at position 38. Jardin is now at position 79, with Aubergine (position 96) and Rust en Vrede (position 98) completing the list.
It’s great to see South Africa performing better against international competition. It’s no surprise that all five of these restaurants are located in the Western Cape (as usual).
El Bulli in Spain takes the number one spot again, followed by The Fat Duck in the UK. Interestingly Spain has three of the top five restaurants.
