The Good Food & Wine Show will be taking place in Cape Town next month at the ICC. This is definitely one of the biggest food related events on the calendar. There is so much going on for the duration of the show, one could easily spend more than a day there. Apart from the multitude of stands, there will be several theatres where you can watch chefs in action, there will be a market, a restaurant, a wine sale and much more.
General entry is R80 for adults and R40 for children under 12 and pensioners, but there are some package options which include entry to things like the Gordon Ramsay cooking demonstration. Find the details here.
As part of their social responsibility, Gourmet SA, who organise the Good Food & Wine show, also organise the Table of Peace and Unity. The table is situated on the slopes of Table Mountain for an unprecedented view and seats 700 people. The entire price of the tickets is donated to charities that assist abused children. Last year they raised over R1 million.
I was invited to attend this year, the 10th year that this event has taken place. It’s actually quite an impressive event. Never mind the enormous table and marquee to host 700 people, think about the food. Plus, how do you get 700 meals out at the same time? On top of this, there was non stop entertainment to keep the guests entertained. All that adds up to one well organised and executed event.
The food was prepared by some of Cape Town’s well respected chefs and was really good. I don’t know how they managed to serve 700 plates so quickly and my food was still warm when I received it. Let me tease you with the menu we enjoyed:
Starter: Miso cured Salmom, Asian Salad, Prawn Samoosa, Sesame Soy Dressing
Mains: Braised Karoo Lamb with Thyme and Rosemary crust, Potato Dauphinoise, and Port wine sauce
Dessert: Chocolate Mousse Pyramid, Apple and Saffron Puree and Beetroot Syrup
Yum! This was all accompanied by some great wines from Lazanou organic estate. Throughout the lunch we were entertained by well know artists such as Danny K, Coda and Three Tons of Fun. The entertainment was top notch but I did find myself sneaking some quiet moments to absorb the stunning view of this awesome city.
Everybody seemed to have a great time, I know I did. I also met some interesting people and had some good conversation. It’s a fun day for a worthy cause and the slickness of the event bodes well for the Good Food & Wine Show.
